Kyle Pompei holds a Master of Music degree in Horn Performance at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumental Music Education from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where he graduated magna cum laude. Kyle was a Stamps Scholar under the Stamps Family Charitable Foundation, and was a Stamps Scholar Student Board Representative for the Madison campus. He also attended the Preparatory Program of the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. He has studied under the tutelage of Jonathan Ring, Daniel Grabois, and Larry Williams.
Kyle is currently a core member of the Maryland Winds, and has also recently performed with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony, Maryland Symphony Orchestra, National Philharmonic, Piedmont Symphony Orchestra, and the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra. In 2022, he also performed at Constitution Hall, Washington D.C., for the television show Univisionarios, aired live on Televisa Univision. He played third horn in the American Festival Orchestra China Tour, 2019-2020. He has also performed with the Philip Glass Ensemble in Carnegie Hall, New York City, and Davies Hall, San Francisco, for the World Premiere of Music with Changing Parts: Expanded Edition 2018. Other ensembles with which he has performed in include the Golden Gate Symphony, Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, Lyric Brass Quintet, Korea Young Dream Orchestra, HopeBox Charity Youth Orchestra, Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra, Hunt Valley Symphony Orchestra, Greenspring Valley Orchestra, and Columbia Orchestra. Kyle has performed in Kensington Art Theater’s production of Oliver! by Lionel Bart. Kyle was also the co-founder of the Pompei Hively Show, a music comedy series in which he wrote script, arranged music, performed and acted with other musicians. He was involved with SFCM’s Music To Go / Community Service Outreach Program. He was also the recipient of two Craig Jacobsen Memorial Scholarships, James R. Smith Orchestra Award, John Barrows Memorial Scholarship, Pi Eta Chapter of Phi Beta Fraternity award, two Mabel Wiley Scholarships for Music Performance, and the Vincent Constantino Scholarship.
As a teaching artist, Kyle is highly invested in education in addition to performance. He has a private horn studio of 15 students based in Howard County. He was the resident horn coach for the Howard County High School Gifted & Talented Orchestras. Previously, he was a brass coach for the Emmanuel Youth Orchestra, as well as a horn intern for the Philharmonia Orchestra, under the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras program. He was also a camp counselor and peer mentor for the Honors Orchestra Program at the Pine Mountain Music Festival in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Kyle was a Teaching Artist in the Pre-College of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music from 2017-2018.
In addition to all things horn related, Kyle enjoys conducting. From 2019 - 2020, he has conducted the wind and brass sectionals for the Howard County Gifted and Talented Middle School Chamber Orchestra. For conducting, he has been under the tutelage of Scott Teeple and Jacques Desjardins. Outside of music, Kyle enjoys running, cooking, and having a good glass of California wine.
Kyle is affiliated with the American Federation of Musicians. He currently plays on a Lewis and Dürk LDX5 horn with a two-piece San Francisco 14-0-2 mouthpiece.
